Installation/Expressive/Interactive Art

Assalamualaikum and hello guys!

Today's blog, I won't update about what happen to me but I'm updating about my assignment which is on Installation/Expressive/Interactive Art for the Interaction Studies MIS 1013 subject. Let me start with the definition of the installation/expressive/interactive art.

What is Installation/Expressive/Interactive Art?

From Wikipedia, Installation Art is an artistic genre of 3D works that often site specific and designed to transform the perception of a space while the definition of interactive art is a form of art that involve the spectator in a way that allows the art to achieve its purpose. That was from the wikipedia. But what I've learn in the class, installation/expressive/interactive art is a platform for the artist to express their feelings through art. The art may be understand by the viewer or not but mostly are not because its about the feelings, what the author felt about something.

How was the video? Is it interesting? Okay. Let's go to the details of the artwork. The name of the artwork is a Laserman Electronica Show. The event occurs in Disneyland, California in 2011. I can't find who is the person perform the laser show as what my lecturer said that some of the artist doesn't want to be known. The content of the video is about a man interact with the laser where he can bend the laser light and make it double and more and more.

When I watch this video, its remind me of the Star Wars movie were they use laser as their weapon. The laser light bounce and moving when the person touch or stretch it. Besides that, the person can bend the light at a certain degress. Furthermore, the person can lift up the laser light and play with it where he turn it up and down, left and right. After that, he breaks the laser light into two and he extent the length of the laser light. He extent the laser light by shake it and it becomes long. He keep playing with the laser light and after that he combine back the laser light into one like at the earlier of the video. The most of the interaction in this video is the person keep moving the laser light in a few directions, which is one of it is circle. After that, the laser light changing color from green to yellow for a while and then to red. At the end of the show, the person lost in the middle of the light lasers and that whole video make me want to say "It's AWESOME", "How he do it?" I said that because from what I know, the light can travel in a straight line So, how he bend the laser light? Besides that, it make me feel want to try or play with it at the moment right now. The elements use in this video are light, touch and motion/movement. This elements make the show looks more interesting.


What attracted you to this piece of interactive art in the first place?

The first thing that attracts me to this artwork is the laser light. The artist make use of the laser light where he bend, stretch, break, rotate, extent and double it. He just touch or hold and move the laser light, then the it make that such of actions that I've type before this. Besides that, the changes of color also attract me to this artwork. The colors play an important role in every artwork so we need to carefully choose the color. The color choosen in this artwork is quite good and that's why it attracts my attention.

How did you feel when you first saw this interaction art?

When I saw this piece of an interactive art, I felt like I'm moving together with the laser light. When the artist rotate the laser light, I felt like I'm rotating too. When the artist turn it upside down, I felt the same thing too. Same goes to the other actions. At the last part of the show when the artist double up the number of laser light and then suddenly lost, it make me lost too into the background. Besides that, I felt I'm safe with the appearance of the light in the middle of darkness. Furthermore, I interpret the one and only light as a hope. The dark background represent as a bad future but with the appearance of the light, its give me a hope where I can change or improve my future.

What elements made this interactive art successful in engaging you?

As what I've mention before this, there are three (3) elements involve in this art which are light, touch and also motion/movement. All those elements related with each other and make it as a successful art. Without the light, the artist can't really show what he want to tell. Without the touch, there will be no motion/movement and without motion/movement, there will be no interactive art. But I think, the most element use and important is the motion/movement element. For me, interactive art need something that moving, something that we can interact.

What was the 'wow' factor to you?

The factor that make me said 'AWESOME' is when the artist break the laser light into two (2) and then he extent both of the laser light. It become more awesome when he combine back both of the line and also multiple the number of laser light. It make me think 'how he do it?' Besides that, the changes of color of the laser light is one of the factor that contribute to the awesomeness. Suddenly, the color changes. Its really make me feel happy and calm.

If there is one thing that you want to add to this interactive artwork, what would it be?

Can it be more than one thing my dear lecturer? hehehe.. If I have a chance to add to this interactive artwork, I want the artist or the performaer wear a costume like the character in Star Wars movie. It will look more real and the I bet that the audience will remember the show/artwork because its related to the Star Wars movie which is familiar to them. Besides of the Star Wars costume, I would like to suggest if the costume can be interact or related to the laser light. But if the artist can make the laser light come out from the costume, it'll be more awesome.

So, I guess that's it for my assignment. If I type more, it might be more confusing. Before it get worst, better I stop here..hehehe..See you guys in another entry..It might be about my day life or maybe about my assignment again.. bye and Assalamualaikum..Thank you :)
